If you have children under the age of six, we can safely assume that you have been exposed to the delights (!) of Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol and Doc McStuffins on repeat. New kid on the TV block is Puffin Rock and it has been warming the hearts of viewers around the world since it first came on the scene in 2015. In its first picture book edition, we go on an adventure with Oona and Baba.
Co-created by Cartoon Saloon, Dog Ears and Penguin Books, Puffin Rock revolves around life on the island of Puffin Rock and the adventures of brother-sister duo Oona and Baba (puffins) and their friend, Mossy (a pygmy shrew). One day, they discover a mysterious egg and they have to find its parents before it hatches. The clock is ticking!
Along the way, the buddies meet some hungry looking seagulls, a big slide and a couple of guillemots (a species of seabirds. Thank you Google). After a long day searching and a hatching, they finally find mama and papa. Like a lot of the stories coming from the island, this focuses on family relationships. Another successful day for Oona, Baba and Mossy.
For fans of the TV show, this book is a delight. It is educational as it mixes pre-school learning with fun facts about nature and wildlife. While this reviewer is far from pre-school age, I even learned some new wildlife facts.
Its setting on Puffin Rock island off the coast of Ireland gives a remote feel to the illustrations and make them quite unique. Even if you haven’t watched the show, this book has the right amount of charm and cuteness for it to stand alone. Expect Puffin Rock picture books to be requested time and time again at bedtime.
Located in Kilkenny, Cartoon Saloon have created some breathtaking animations in their time (Song of the Sea, Secret of Kells) and have won awards the world over. Derry-based Dog Ears is a children’s media company that really packs a punch in the stories it creates. Combined with the book smarts of Penguin Books, Puffin Rock is here to stay.
