This is the Story of You

You know that feeling when you finish the last page of a book and you’re in denial that it’s finished. Well, it seems like our Teenfunked reviewer experienced just that sense of loss when finishing this book. Maedbh McEvoy absolutely loved This is the Story of You by Beth Kephart. It’s hot off the presses and certainly one for your summer reading lists.

This is the Story of YouIn this beautifully-crafted story, we meet Mira Banul. A ‘year rounder’ in the sleepy, beach-holiday island of Haven, Mira is a caring and incredibly strong young girl. Her life, and the lives of the other year-rounders, revolves around the ocean, and they have a great respect for nature. But nature spurns thus reverence when a swirling, raging storm devastates their home town.

With the storm comes more than just destruction: it also blows in mysteries and questions. In this book, we join Mira in the search for truth and pursuit of hope.

This is an alluring tale of resilience and perseverance and the courage and strength of a young girl facing impossible odds. Through Mira’s memories, observations and experiences, Kephart paints a captivating portrait of life on a storm ravaged island.

The book is very melodic and it reads almost like poetry. Kephart has the rare gift of turning everyday observations and occurrences into something meaningful and powerful, and portrays the ordinary as the extraordinary.

This novel illustrates the strength of love, and proves that there is always light in a seemingly impenetrable dark.

“Kephart has the rare gift of turning everyday observations and occurrences into something meaningful and powerful, and portrays the ordinary as the extraordinary.”

You won’t be able to put this book down. It is so enticing. And although the book is easy to follow, it is in no way a ‘light read’, giving you plenty to think about. An enchanting novel, with a beautiful rhythm and musical quality.
